In Jeannie Ann’s Grandma Has Breast Cancer, author, Diane Davies channels her experience with breast cancer to create a compassionate tale focused on helping young children deal with the gravity of a loved one being diagnosed with cancer. Jeannie Ann discovers that her Grandma has breast cancer. Just like any other young child, she is filled with worry and confusion about what this means for her and her family. As the book goes on, Jeannie Ann slowly learns all about cancer and its implications along with the remarkable power of love and family. Although the subject of cancer is an immensely sensitive and heavy issue, Davies adeptly addresses the questions and emotions that arise with a cancer diagnosis while encouraging readers to stay hopeful and maintain the belief that things can get better. The story flows naturally and is written in a light-hearted, easy to understand manner. In addition, the suggestions at the end of the book for families who are dealing with the diagnosis of cancer, will also be helpful to parents who are unsure of how to broach the subject with their young ones. Overall, Jeannie Ann’s Grandma Has Breast Cancer is a wonderful children’s book that will help assuage fears that arise in kids due to illness and teach them that love and loss are a part of life.
